Nurse:

 

Nurses are responsible to implement comprehensive school health services, carry out physician orders and direct a plan of care provided to the individual student. This includes direct care, referrals, and coordination of provider services either on or off campus.  The Nurses work out of a clinic located in the school building.  The clinic is open daily from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.  In addition there are certain hours set daily for students to be seen.  Nurses provide staggered service hours to link the academic and residential sectors. Duties include the oversight and continuity of preventive and emergency care: child and adolescent screening protocols, diagnostic and treatment protocols, of diagnosed medications administration, charting and record keeping, and consultation to students, families, and school staff or partnership agencies.  A student will be seen for an emergency anytime.  Students who are ill or have a health problem sign up in their respective dormitory clinic list.  The nursing staff dispense all medications during the day.  CNS requires staff to be "Med Certified" if they are to administer any medications. 

 

Health areas that the nurses have a primary responsibility for are:

  • Physical Examinations

  • Glasses

  • Dental Care

  • Hospitalization

We have a two licensed practical nurses (LPN) on staff.  One has basic responsibility for the school (day time) and one has all dormitories (night hours).

The nurses have the additional support of our part time physician (two days per week).   Also, we have a licensed pharmacy technician that distributes all prescription medications to the clinics and dormitories.  This team of staff train dormitory staff needing the Med Certification.

 

Pharmacy Technician:

 

Pharmacy Technician is responsible for all quality assurance procedures related to prescription fills and medications administration, storage, dispensation and disposal. Policy: Medications shall be administered to all children/youth in the physical custody of the Circle of Nations School in a timely manner, according to the orders of the prescribing practitioner and in accordance with applicable state and federal laws. The school shall regulate the handling of medications in accordance with professional standards of care, good security practices, and appropriate state and federal laws.
